How did you get into your sport: After many years of playing a team sport mostly touch football, I needed an individual sport to focus on…. Having always had a love of swimming and running, a university friend suggested Triathlon, so I gave it a shot. It was a very fast transition from fun club events to taking it more seriously, it’s an addictive sport once you start seeing results from your training efforts.
Hardest thing about your sport: What does your regular training week consists of: The difficulty is training for not one but 3 different sports and pulling them together. Lots of early mornings to fit everything in, balancing family, work and training can be tough at times. Generally there is 3 sessions of each swimming, running and riding a week averaging around 12+hours a week.
How do you keep motivated: Focusing on ticking off sessions on the program daily, seeing the little improvement not just focussing on the big picture helps! I’ve always found having a coach to be accountable to helps motivate you to continue. Also I always have an event a year ahead to work towards.
Goals (Future Plans and Career expectations): At the moment I’m focused on training for the ITU World championships for sprint distance, this is held on home ground this year (Gold Coast) in September. After this I have some decisions to make between long course triathlon racing or focus on trail running…hmmmmm
Best piece of advice you have been given: Spend the extra time and money where necessary on the important things athlete often overlook, enough recovery (time resting, scheduled massage and physio) and good tested nutrition plans and products. Without these races and general training suffers. It’s so true the fuel right, feel great moto.
