Russell and Brad, who I mentioned earlier, have completed their ride across Australia.

Russell got to the Gold Coast as planned on Sunday afternoon.

Brad took a detour and rode to Newcastle.

A great effort by the guys to complete such a massive ride and support the Make A Wish charity.

We were thrilled to be their source of fuel with our:

“Latest news isn’t great people I’m afraid.

I’m not sure where Brad is presently … still resting somewhere about 1000 km’s from Broadbeach I think.

Russell was hoping to still clock the k’s over and make the final days ride on Sunday but his intended 300km night effort last evening was unsuccessful.

35 kph headwinds and fatigue are really taking their toll. This morning saw him out there suddenly realising that they had miscalculated the distance and their 4400 km’s had now become more like 4800 km’s … maybe more.

Russell Still Has 800 km To Go

At around 10am this morning Russell rolled into Coonabarabran, clocking over the 4000 km mark with something like 800 km’s still to go.

With the headwinds he is lucky to maintain 10 -15 kph and knows now he will not make the Gold Coast before Sunday.

Physically he is struggling greatly now and today the mental game was starting to be too much also.

New Plan

Russell has come a long way and is still determined to get as much done as he can.

He spoke to the cops in Coonabarabran about the highway and his concern with the trucks that were starting to outright scare the living bearings out of him and they suggested a tourist route that would be quieter for him … also a bit longer we think.

As fas as I know he rested in Coonabarabran for most of the day and I’m guessing, sometime around now he is heading out and starting again.

Heroes In Many Forms

Without doubt, if Russell chose to finish now he can be happy that is already an MTB Dirt hero at the very least.

We Wait

As of this moment I’m not sure what the plan is.

Russell could be on one of 3 routes we think:

1. Original
2. A secondary route heading towards the Qld border closer to Tweed than Warwick
3. Heading for Coffs Harbour.

We wait to see.

I’m hoping Russ heads for Coff’s which will hopefully still see him achieve the 4400 km’s and still get from one coast of Aussie to the other.”

This just in from Russell Worthington on his and Brad Poidevan’s trans Australia mountain bike ride:

In Port Augusta

“Well the good news is we have arrived at Port Augusta SA in the wee hours this morn.

We’re OVER half way now:)! We still have along way to go now in what we are expecting to be scorching conditions through far east SA and the NSW outback.

Spirits are high. We’ve been through testing conditions, and know there will be more, but we’re confident we will still arrive on the Gold Coast as planned next weekend.

Working Well Together

Brad’s an excellent friend and team mate. We’re working well together to maximise chances of completing this Gigantic goal (in only 3 weeks) 🙂

We are also seeing some amazing outback sunrises and sunsets. The cliffs of the GREAT Australian Bight are well worth a look if you get a chance.

We plan cross the SA/NSW border tomorrow night, and will bunk down in Broken Hill tomorrow night. Still lots of adventure ahead.”

Russell Worthington and Brad Poidevan are 2 guys riding across Australia ride on mountain bikes.
This is what Russell had to say:

“Even though originally this ride stemmed from interest in the personal challenge, Brad and I are now enjoying the personal challenge of doing this for the better reason of raising some money for others.

I’ve already received a lot of interest, well wishes, encouragement and expression of utter insanity etc from good friends, so thank you also for yours!”

The guys have covered close on 200 kms a day and are looking to finish on the Gold Coast on January 5, 2008.

Less than 5 hours later she’d won – not just her age group, but she also stunned the pros to take the overall victory!
